Packaged Facts forecasts the U.S. market for household cleaning products to grow two percent through 2012 reaching $8.1 billion. That's actually a decrease in consumer spending from 2008, however, its still an overall growth in household cleaning products used in the U.S.. In their article on, "Household Cleaning Products in the U.S.," they break down specific reasons why spending has decreased and the household cleaning products market defined in six broad categories. I agree with some of their findings, however, I'll add a bit of my own clarity to the mix, in addition, I will lump the commercial cleaning industry for a broader analysis.
Reason To Purchase Household Cleaning Products/Commercial Cleaning Products
According to Packaged Facts, consumers are taking a more conscientious approach in the purchase of cleaning products. It's all about what's best for the environment. I agree with this reasoning, even the EPA has put more emphasis on recommending certain household cleaning products that will do less harm to the environment and even focusing on the active ingredient levels. However, this new eco-friendly mind frame has had an effect on the pockets of many consumers, perhaps forcing them to spend less on cleaning products throughout the year. Buying green products is amazing for the environment, however, retailers are hiking prices on those specialty products we should be purchasing to save the environment. According to Packaged Facts, they expect more consumers to make cleaning a lifestyle choice rather than simply a sanitary chore. I think the high costs of eco-friendly products can be directly related to this reason.
Packaged Facts also states that an accelerated growth of two-person households may cause an increase in spending on household cleaning products. I differ in opinion on this particular reason, and in actually I think it will have no effect on spending. In my opinion, a two-person household will only be a slight difference in cleaning within the home, however, the spending will probably be the same or slightly decreased due to the change in quantity. When you have 2 different households, that's 2 separate vacuums you have to purchase, two separate mops, two separate mop buckets, and so on. Now combining the households, all of those separate purchasing become 1 single purchase. Below are Packaged Facts categories of household cleaning products market.
The category forgotten on this list are cleaning supplies. That will make a vast difference in the over all consumer spending levels, and perhaps change the overall findings. One fact that will never change, consumers will always need cleaning products, and supplies to clean their homes, offices, institutions, and businesses.
